Physical Education Class Guidelines

Returning to teach physical education at BES is Coach Stefanie Harrelson.

Physical Education Curriculum Overview

The four main components of physical education are knowledge, physical fitness, physical skill, and participation.  Early elementary students will focus on space and time orientation, hand-eye coordination, balance, and basic locomotor and non-locomotor skills. Upper elementary students will work on throwing, catching, striking skills, and will learn some elements of individual, dual, and team sports skills.  All grades will work on rhythms, cooperative games, sportsmanship, and health-related physical fitness. Physical Education teachers also collaborate with classroom teachers to determine teaching strategies to implement during physical education classes which reinforces enhances students' academic performance.

Physical Fitness Assessments Grades

Again this year we will administer fitness tests, called FitnessGram, to screen students' health. It is a battery of tests to measure different components of health-related physical fitness. The results can be used as benchmarks and to show improvement. We plan to send home results along with 1st and 4th nine weeks report cards. Nine weeks grades will be S (satisfactory), N (needs improvements), or U (unsatisfactory).

Students with Special/Medical Needs Proper Dress/Shoes

Please share information with us regarding students' special problems/needs that may be impacted by physical activity. Also, students may have about half of their PE classes outdoors, so for safety and good health, student should wear appropriate shoes and clothes daily for the weather conditions. The Exploratory Calendar has been posted on our website. Once you know the color of of your your child's rainbow group, you can determine which exploratory class they will go to on a given day, either art, computers, music, or physical education.
